Kids Kitchen Bread and butter pudding – good for small & big tummies!
Serves four
225g / 8 oz Sliced white bread (or brown, or for a real treat, brioche!)
Room temperature unsalted butter
Two table spoons caster sugar (optional, depends how sweet you would like it)
25g / 1 oz sultanas
1 oven proof dish 6 by 4 inch or whatever you have…
Crème Anglaise
2 medium eggs
2 egg yolks
225ml/ 8 fl oz Milk
190ml/ 6.5 fl oz double cream
¼ teaspoon Vanilla essence or a vanilla pod
95 g / 3 oz Caster sugar
Fantastic ‘cheats’ Way:
Crème anglaise can be very much cheated (kind of!) by:
415ml Evaporated milk
2 eggs
¼ teaspoon vanilla essence/ vanilla pod/
Just whisk it all up and pour over your finished bread and butter dish!
Recipe:
1. Butter your bread to the corners and then cut off the crusts and then in half corner to corner (diagonally).
2. Mix the milk, cream, sugar and vanilla together and give to a grown up to bring to the boil.
3. Put the egg yolks and eggs into a big mixing bowl and ask your grown up to pour the hot mixture onto the egg mixture and whisk. Remind your grown up to add this slowly and mix constantly. Don’t worry if the sauce doesn’t thicken, it’s not meant to!
4. Place a layer of the buttered bread on to the dish, sprinkle your sultanas and a little bit of sugar, and repeat till all the bread and sultana’s have gone.
5. Pour over the Crème Anglaise mixture and leave to soak for 45 minutes making sure the bread is well soaked.
6. Ask your grown up to cook in a pre-heated oven of 175C or Gas Mark 3 ½ for 30 minutes until golden brown.
7. Leave to cool and serve with whatever you like, although ice cream and cream are very yummy!
Well Done! Yummy bread and butter pudding to share… if you like..
