With the recipes provided, little ‘cheats’ are suggested when your available time is limited, or any other reason! We think the whole point is to have little bit of fun, with an edible result – how you get there is up to you!
Good cooking and good luck, not that you’ll need it….
Kids Kitchen Yummy Whizzy Pizza
Pizza sauce:
Two tins of chopped/whole tomatoes
One dessert spoon of tomato puree
One small chopped onion
2 large cloves garlic
¼ teaspoon dried oregano
Pinch sugar
Pinch salt (optional)
Table spoon extra virgin olive oil
Teaspoon of butter
Childs handful of fresh basil (Grown up half!)
Fantastic ‘Cheats’ Way:
One jar Napolina (or any make) Pizza Base Sauce
1. Gently fry the chopped onion and garlic in the olive oil and butter (with your grown-up for assistance with the hot pan!) until see through.
2. Add all the rest of the ingredients, bring to a simmer and then reduce the heat and leave to cook for twenty to twenty five minutes, stirring occasionally.
3. Taste test after the twenty to twenty five minutes and check that you like the flavour, if not, add a little bit extra of what you think it needs! Your taste is individual so experiment and find what you like – this recipe is my favourite – doesn’t mean it will be yours!
4. When the sauce is to your taste, add the basil leaves and stir through. Place to one side to leave to cool and then start work on your pizza base:
Makes 1 large pizza or two small
6 oz Strong white flour (or ordinary plain flour)
1 sachet quick action dried yeast
Hand temperature water (20ml)
Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil (optional, just adds a lovely taste)
Pinch sugar
Pinch salt (optional)
Fantastic ‘cheats’ way:
One pack fast action pizza base mix (available in all major stores, an organic option is also available through Dove’s products)
Follow the instructions, but do try and put a tablespoon of olive oil in for taste.
1. Sieve the flour into a mixing bowl.
2. Add the sachet of quick action dried yeast with the salt and sugar
3. Begin to mix the hand temperature water slowly into the flour mixture using your hands. Keep adding bit by bit until you’re flour mix is like play dough!
4. If you’re adding the olive oil, add this now and mix it in thoroughly using your hands. You’ve now made pizza dough! Well done!
5. Now, prepare your rolling area: place some flour onto a chopping board or hard surface (so the dough doesn’t stick) and take your dough out of the mixing bowl and place it on this floured area.
6. Now, learning to knead; take the dough and pummel into it using your fists, turning it over and onto itself from the sides and front. Keep doing this for a little while (as long as you can, but don’t worry if you have to stop because you’re a bit tired. This makes your dough more elastic, breaking up the gluten in the flour. )
7. Okay, take you kneaded dough and leave it to ‘proof’ (rise) in a warm area. This only takes about twenty minutes.
8. When the dough has proofed, take it out and back onto your floured surface and roll it out with your rolling pin. Put a little bit of flour on you rolling pin so it won’t stick to you dough. (I’d ask your grown-up to put their oven on now, 180C, so it’s ready to cook your pizza when it’s ready)
9. Traditionally, pizzas are round; however, no one says they have to be, so it’s up to you what shape you want you pizza to be. When finished, a handy hint can be to do the rest of the preparation on the baking sheet or pizza tray you’re actually going to cook on, to save moving a fully loaded pizza! Makes sure the pizza base or baking sheet is greased with a light covering of olive oil (to get a crispier base, a pre heated baking tray or base will aid this, but don’t use a pre heated one to build your pizza on, fingers may get burnt))
10. Add your pizza sauce that you made earlier by taking a ladle, putting a full ladle of sauce on your pizza base, and use the bottom of the ladle to smudge it around until you have a nice, even layer. Resist the urge to make the sauce too thick, as this will make your pizza soggy!
11. Put any toppings you like on top of this – again – if you put on too may, you’ll make your pizza soggy. My favourite is mozzarella (hard mozzarella, grated) and fresh basil. This is called a Margarita and is a good first pizza for anyone!
12. Place your pizza in the oven and cook for ten minutes until crispy and golden brown. Remove from the oven, leave to cool and eat! Yum…oh, don’t forget to let your grown up helper have a little taste…
